Portland, Ore. – Portland Winterhawks star forward Seth Jarvis has officially cracked the Carolina Hurricanes’ opening night roster.
Jarvis, 19, is one of just 11 teenagers on an NHL team roster and he will have the opportunity to play full time in Raleigh, N.C. this season. However, this doesn’t eliminate the possibility of Jarvis returning to Portland sometime this season, nor does it affect his chances of playing for Hockey Canada at 2022 World Juniors this winter.
National Hockey League teams are allowed to play their 18 and 19-year-old prospects in up to nine NHL games without any penalty to the years of service requirements or the impact of when a player can become a free agent. When a player appears in ten games it starts their three-year, entry-level contract and gets the player one year closer to becoming a free agent. Once a signed prospect plays in his tenth game, he earns a year of service as an NHL player. The same can be said about the number of regular season games a Canadian Hockey League player is on roster for. If he is on the team’s roster for more than 40 regular season games, it will also begin the player’s entry-level contract and get him one year closer to becoming an unrestricted free agent.
So why does this matter? The Portland Winterhawks still has a chance of retaining their two-time Team MVP for another year in the Rose City all depending on how the Hurricanes management decides to utilize their top prospect. If the Canes don’t want to burn a year of his contract, they need to send him back to Portland before he accrues ten NHL games played or 41 regular season games (which is exactly half of an 82-game NHL regular season) on Carolina’s roster.
No matter where Seth Jarvis ends this season geographically, we are tremendously excited to continue to cheer on the former first round NHL draft pick whether he’s a Hurricane or a Winterhawk.
