With the 2019 NHL Draft approaching, Winterhawks defenseman Clay Hanus is hopeful to hear his name called at Rogers Arena in Vancouver on June 22.

The first-year draft eligible skater played in all 68 games this season, totaling eight goals and 19 assists for 27 points. Through five playoff games, Hanus dished out three assists and will be one of the Hawks more experienced returners for the 2019-20 campaign.

The Excelsior, Minnesota native has always had the offensive ability and thus quarterbacked the team’s second power play unit during his sophomore season. He moves exceptionally well, has a strong hockey IQ, excels at moving the puck up ice, and knows when to join the rush. Despite being under six feet tall (5-10, 170 lbs.), Hanus is learning to play bigger than his size to help his transition to professional hockey down the road.

Last summer, Hanus participated at USA Hockey’s Select 17 camp and he was recognized on one of the two all-star teams after the event. The Winterhawks also named Hanus their 2018-19 Scholastic Player of the Year.
