Petan’s OT Heroics Send Hawks to Second Round

Nic Petan scored the Game 6 overtime winner as the Portland Winterhawks defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-4 to advance to the second round of the WHL Playoffs.

With 59 seconds to go in overtime, Petan launched a shot from the right faceoff circle that beat Seattle netminder Taran Kozun for a 5-4 win and their sixth straight trip to the second round.

The Hawks await the winner of the series between the Everett Silvertips at Spokane Chiefs, with Game 6 in progress at the time of this writing, with Everett up 3-2 in the series.

Portland opened the scoring 8:53 into the game when Oliver Bjorkstrand collected a rebound in the slot, spun and fired it past Kozun for a 1-0 lead. The Thunderbirds got it back at 14:48 on a goal by Scott Eansor to even the game at 1-1, which remained the score going into the second.

The Hawks opened the second with a pair of goals just 1:06 apart early in the frame. First Dominic Turgeon redirected a puck past Kozun at 2:17, followed quickly by Bjorkstrand winning a battle in front of the net and firing it in for his second of the game and a 3-1 advantage.

Seattle fought back with goals from Shea Theodore and Corey Millette halfway through the frame to tie the game at 3-3 heading into the third.

It remained even until the 11:25 mark of the third when Miles Koules went end-to-end, beat a defenseman and scored on a wraparound for a 4-3 Hawks lead. It remained a one-goal game until 1:40 remained in regulation when Eansor scored his second of the game for Seattle to even it at 4-4 and force overtime, where Petan scored the winner to punch the Hawks’ ticket to the second round.

Along with two goals from Bjorkstrand, Koules had a goal and assist for two points.

Adin Hill earned the win in net, stopping 46 of 50 shots. Kozun finished with 36 saves on 41 Portland shots.
