The New York Islanders have announced that they are returning forward Nino Niederreiter to the Portland Winterhawks. Niederreiter is expected to be in uniform this weekend when the team hosts the Kelowna Rockets both Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Memorial Coliseum.
Tickets are available online at ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster locations, the Rose Quarter box office and the Winterhawks’ ticket office in the Memorial Coliseum.
In nine games with the Islanders, Niederreiter scored one goal and added one assist for two points. The Islanders selected Niederreiter with the fifth overall pick in the 2010 National Hockey League Entry Draft, making him the highest-drafted Swiss-born player in NHL history.
“We’re very excited to have Nino coming back, he will provide a big boost to our team,” said Portland Winterhawks General Manager & Head Coach Mike Johnston. “I had an opportunity to watch most of the games he played with the Islanders and I’m confident he will be there full-time next year.”
Niederreiter led Portland with 36 goals last season, becoming the first Winterhawk with 30+ goals since 2004-05, and finished with 60 points. His 36 goals were second among all WHL rookies, he tied for the league lead among rookies with six game-winning goals, tied for third among first-year players with 11 power play goals and his 60 points ranked seventh among rookies.
He added 16 points, including a team-high eight goals, in the playoffs and following the season was named to the WHL’s Second All-Star team. He also represented his native Switzerland at the 2010 World Junior Championship, leading the team to the semifinals and was named to the tournament All-Star team. He also played for Switzerland at the 2010 World Championship.
