Black Hockey History Night

PORTLAND vs. SEATTLE
SATURDAY, FEB. 11  •  6:00 P.M.
VETERANS MEMORIAL COLISEUM

The Portland Winterhawks hosted the fourth annual Black Hockey History Night at the VMC on Feb. 11, 2023!

As part of our ongoing efforts to help ensure that hockey is for everyone, Black Hockey History Night is an opportunity for the Winterhawks family to recognize the impact of black athletes in the hockey community, both in Portland and around the hockey world. The team has partnered with local Black-owned apparel company Bproud to continue to grow the sport we love.

During the game, we heard from NHL Senior Executive Vice President Kim Davis on her experience as a black female executive in the world of hockey, plus we celebrated and recognized former Black Winterhawks players.

The Winterhawks offered a one-of-a-kind, specialty t-shirt created by Bproud and our friends at Portland Gear to celebrate Portland’s Black Hockey History. Fans can get to know Bproud at the game, with a video set to air during intermission.

Black Hockey History Night also featured fundraising efforts through a number of other game-night activities, including specialty t-shirt sales and Winterhawks memorabilia auction/sale items, with proceeds benefitting local Black-owned non-profits in our community like AAAH and BMIT.

Portland’s own Ashley Howard was a special announcer for night, providing fans in-arena commentary alongside public address announcer Michael Burle. Howard is also a member of The Portland Rosebuds Dance Team.
