Portland, Ore. – The Portland Winterhawks, proud member club of the Western Hockey League, are excited to make one selection during the 2022 CHL Import Draft which will be held on Friday, July 1 at 8:00 a.m. PT.

The Winterhawks hold the 52nd and 112th overall selections in the upcoming draft, but will only use one of those picks as they have elected to protect the rights to Czech defenseman Marek Alscher.

Alscher is listed as the 177th best North American skater by NHL Central Scouting on its final rankings ahead of the 2022 NHL Draft. During his rookie season in the Rose City, Alscher scored 16 points in 61 games and became one of the best shutdown defensemen in the Western Conference.

The CHL Import Draft presents each team in the WHL, OHL and QMJHL an opportunity to add a maximum of two high-impact skaters or goaltenders from outside North America who can quickly make their mark during the upcoming season.

In recent years, the Winterhawks have had success adding high-end NHL prospects to their organization through the CHL Import Draft.  Nino Niederreiter (2009), Oliver Bjorkstrand (2012) and Henri Jokiharu (2016) each thrived in Portland before making it to the NHL.  Additionally, forwards Sven Bärtschi (2010) and Joachim Blichfeld (2016) made immediate impacts in the Rose City after being selected in the CHL Import Draft and both recently wrapped up successful seasons in the American Hockey League.

Going back in time a bit, the Winterhawks added future NHL Hall of Fame forward and Memorial Cup Champion Marián Hossa through the CHL Import Draft 25 years ago. Richard Zednik (1994) and Jannik Hansen (2005) are also two Winterhawk selections that went on to have notable careers at the top level.
