Winterhawks to Select 36th Overall in WHL Prospects Draft

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Western Hockey League announced today the draft order for the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft and the Portland Winterhawks will make their first selection with the 36th overall pick.

The 2021 WHL Prospects Draft, formerly the WHL Bantam Draft, is scheduled for Thursday, December 9. Portland owns four picks in the first 83 overall selections and will look to add to its impressive prospect group.

The Winterhawks have had success selecting in the second, third and fourth rounds of previous drafts, including current Winterhawks Reece Newkirk (3rd round, 53rd overall in 2016), Kade Nolan (4th round, 84th overall in 2016), Cross Hanas (4th round, 77th overall in 2017), and Kyle Chyzowski (3rd round, 58th overall in 2019).  Notable alumni also selected in those rounds in the last decade include Caleb Jones, Dominic Turgeon, Keoni Texeira and Taylor Leier.

The Winterhawks traded their first round pick in this year’s draft to the Swift Current Broncos in 2019 to acquire goaltender Joel Hofer who helped lead the Hawks to a Scotty Munro Championship during the WHL 2019-20 season. Hofer also helped Canada win a gold medal at the IIHF World Junior Championships and he recently completed his first year of pro hockey with the Utica Comets, American Hockey League affiliate of the St. Louis Blues.

Players eligible for the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft will be 2006-born players who reside in Alberta, B.C., Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
