Offense would come late in the second period as WHL rookie Haydn Delorme scored his first of the preseason on a breakaway feed from Tyson Kozak to tie the game at one apiece.
The third period would go the Winterhawks way as veteran Ty Kolle scored the lone goal of the frame on a rocket of a shot from the left wing circle at the 13:28 mark of the final period. Forwards Conor MacEachern and Dean Schwenninger collected the assists on the play.
Evan Fradette would finish the game with 15 saves en route to his first victory of the season. Americans goaltender Beck Warm looked in mid-season form stopping 44 of 46 shots.
