Portland Winterhawks General Manager & Head Coach Mike Johnston is one of the finalists for the Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year at Sunday’s Oregon Sports Awards.
The award goes to the outstanding coach, administrator or organization from an Oregon-based team at any level of competition in the calendar year 2010.
“I’m incredibly honored to be a finalist for the Slats Gill Award,” said Johnston. “I see this not just as a nomination for myself, but for our entire organization.”
The other nominees for the Slats Gill Award are Linfield College baseball coach Scott Brosius, Aloha High School football coach Chris Casey, University of Oregon football coach Chip Kelly and University of Oregon cross country/track and field coach Vin Lananna.
The Winterhawks will also be represented at the Oregon Sports Awards by defenseman Brett Ponich and forward Craig Cunningham, who will be presenters for one of the awards.
The Oregon Sports Awards take place Sunday in the Tiger Woods Center at Nike’s headquarters. The event will be hosted by Ahmad Rashad and later broadcast on Comcast Sports Northwest.
