Hawks in the Community: May 2023

Throughout the summer, Winterhawks.com will feature monthly recaps of the organization’s efforts to connect with and support the greater Portland community, as well as a look ahead at what’s to come. It may be the offseason for hockey, but we’re proud to be a year-round staple of the Rose City and can’t wait to see you all at an upcoming event!
JUSTIN BOYCE SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Prior to our Black Hockey History Night in February, the Winterhawks and the Winterhawks Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA) announced that they would cover costs associated with hockey for two youth players in the area through the Justin Boyce Scholarship. Earlier this month, it was announced that this year’s scholarship has been awarded to Lucas Wyner and Simone Sinha, two players in the Jr. Winterhawks organization. Congratulations to Lucas, Simone and their families!
The Winterhawks and WAHA believe that hockey is for everyone, no matter your financial standing, and the scholarship aims to support those who cannot afford to play hockey. Stay tuned to Winterhawks social next season to apply for the scholarship once it re-opens.
The Winterhawks Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA) is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that helps promote and support amateur hockey and recreational skating in the greater Portland/Vancouver area. WAHA funds a variety of important, youth-focused programs year-round including:
- Tom’s Tykes program, which introduces kids to ice skating
- The Summer Floor Hockey program, which provides an introduction to hockey
- Coaching, ice time, and player scholarships
- Winterhawks Player Education Fund
Reedville Elementary Career Fair
The Hawks started off their summer events by attending the Reedville Elementary Career Fair to educate the kids on what it’s like to work in sports and create relationships with schools within the community. We had the opportunity to reach the kids in underprivileged communities and give them an experience we hope they won’t soon forget! Thank you to Reedville Elementary for hosting!

Pleasant Valley Elementary Color Run
On May 19, we visited Pleasant Valley Elementary in Battle Ground, WA, and participated in their annual color run. Our staff was able to mingle with staff, kids, and even got in on the coloring too! Kids in attendance were able to win Winterhawks prizes, interact with the staff, and, most importantly, learn about hockey!
She Flies Community Festival
Last weekend, we had the honor of partnering with Sport Oregon at their SHE FLIES Community Festival. SHE FLIES is an organization under the Sport Oregon Foundation umbrella dedicated to fostering the growth of girls’ and women’s sports. The Hawks staff was on hand with interactive games and prizes to introduce attendees to the Winterhawks’ organization while sharing our mission to promote inclusivity in the WHL and the hockey world as a whole. Thank you to Sport Oregon, SHE FLIES and everyone who helped make the festival a success!
You can expect to see 30 amazing community partners joining us at the SHE FLIES Community Festival next weekend! Check out the current roster and learn more about these incredible organizations.

What’s Next?
The Winterhawks have three events in the community from the end of May through the month of June. Swing by and say hello!
First up, we’re heading to the Portland Timbers and Thorns Career Expo on May 31st at Providence Park where we look forward to talking with local college students and enlightening them on what it’s like to work in sports.
We’re also proud to partner with Juneteenth Oregon and will be participating in their annual 2023 Juneteenth Parade and Festival on June 17th-18th! To learn more about this event click here.
Later in June, we’re off to visit our friends at the Oregon Zoo for their Member Night on June 24th! We look forward to meeting all the members and seeing all the wonderful furry friends at the zoo.
