Making History
There’s a whole lot to love about Oregon Hockey History Night, and it starts before the puck is even dropped! Tonight, we honor the 1983 Memorial Cup Champion Winter Hawks during the 40th anniversary of their victorious campaign, and induct four members of that club into the Portland Winterhawks Hall of Fame. Randy Heath, Cam Neely, Grant Sasser and Ken Yaremchuk are set to join the illustrious group, and Neely’s #21 will be hoisted to the rafters as the first number retired by the organization.
“It’s going to be huge. Especially me, I’m super excited,” said defenseman Marek Alscher. “The guys (from the 1983 team) were in the same position as you. To see how far they made it it’s incredible. Of course, after the game, I’m looking forward to catching up with some of the players and I’m super excited.”
Arrive early and make sure you’re in your seats before 6:00 to catch the full ceremony. Doors open at 5:00 for tonight’s game.
Buckaroo and Find Out
Once the puck is down, you’ll notice a new look for the Hawks as they sport updated versions of the 1936 Portland Buckaroos sweater, complete with off-center logo and all. It’s a unique look that weaves multiple iterations of Buckaroos hockey into the design, from the 1936-inspired striping and shoulder logo to the main crest, which is placed like the 1936 version but designed like the one worn in the 1960’s and 70’s.

The jerseys will be worn tonight, then autographed and raffled off during this year’s “Jersey Off Their Backs” raffle for WAHA. Raffle tickets are available for $10 by clicking here, or by visiting the WAHA table outside Entry CC on the VMC concourse.
Additionally, take a look at original, authentic Buckaroos memorabilia on display from local collector Scott Petterson outside Entry MM. There’s plenty to learn about Oregon’s hockey history, and we’re proud to feature so many eras of our great sport in our great state tonight.
Bouncing Back
Amidst all the excitement, there’s still a hockey game to be played. The Winterhawks gave themselves a chance in last night’s tilt, but individual mistakes proved costly in a 5-2 loss. Despite the result, Portland returns to home ice with yesterday in the review mirror knowing that improved focus throughout the lineup can yield a victory in the rematch.
“We played good tonight. We made a few individual mistakes. In games against Seattle, the difference is so small. We gotta look at the details and have the same energy tomorrow,” said Alscher after the game.
After what should be a rousing pre-game ceremony honoring club legends, look for a quick start from the hosts as they aim for two points against their division rival.
