A Pair of Prospects Earn USHL Honors

Two Portland Winterhawks prospects received end-of-season awards from the United States Hockey League earlier this week.

Seventeen-year-old forward Bobby Brink (Sioux City Musketeers) was named the USHL’s Forward of the Year and recognized on the All-USHL First Team and defenseman Ryan Johnson (Sioux Falls Stampede) was named to the USHL All-Rookie First Team.

Brink recently completed a historic junior hockey season, tying a Sioux City franchise record with 35 goals and adding 33 assists for 68 points in just 43 games. Throughout the year, the Minnesota native recorded three hat tricks, held a USHL best 17 game point streak and tied the league record with five Player of the Week honors. Brink won a gold medal and was named tournament MVP for Team USA at the World Junior A challenge and he is currently playing for Team USA in the IIHF Under-18 World Championships.

Over two seasons in the USHL, Brink’s 1.29 points per game ranks 14th overall in USHL history ahead of players such as Jack Eichel (1.23), Casey Mittelstadt (1.23), Andrei Svechnikov (1.21) and Johnny Gaudreau (1.17). In preparation for the NHL Draft, Brink is a potential first round selection after being ranked No.19 on the final NHL Central Scouting List among North American skaters.

With the Sioux Falls Stampede, 17 year old Ryan Johnson was an elite defenseman who finished with six goals and 19 assists for 25 points in 54 games. The California native is in the midst of of the Clark Cup playoff run with the Stampede. He has one goal and one assist in six playoff games, taking nine shots on goal.

Johnson won USHL Defenseman of the Week honors in October and soon after joined Brink as a gold medalist at the World Junior A Challenge. The Hawks prospect is ranked No.33 (eighth highest defensive prospect) on the final NHL Central Scouting List among North American skaters.
