Portland’s five-game winning streak was snapped Sunday when the Winterhawks fell to the Spokane Chiefs 3-0 at the Memorial Coliseum. It marked the first time this season the Winterhawks had been held scoreless.
It was the second consecutive shutout between the two teams, after Portland took a 2-0 victory last night in Spokane.
The Chiefs opened the scoring on a first period power play at the 4:48 mark when Stefan Ulmer shot the puck past Kurtis Mucha to put the Chiefs up 1-0. The defense was then tested when the Winterhawks were called for three straight penalties, spending several minutes with two men down, but they were able to keep the Chiefs off the board during the extended power play to keep it 1-0.
With Portland on a power play of its own, Mucha made a big save when two Chiefs took advantage of a turnover at the blueline to come in on a breakaway. Mucha was up to the task, turning away the scoring chance to keep it at 1-0 at the end of one.
Although Portland then outshot Spokane 16-11 in the second, it was the Chiefs who would score the only goal of the period when Kyle Beach beat Mucha at the 7:27 mark to increase the score to 2-0, a score that would hold through the end of the period.
Spokane then got an early goal at the 1:07 mark of the third period when Tyler Johnson found the back of the net, making the score 3-0, which would end as the final score.
James Reid earned the win tonight for Spokane with 34 saves, while Mucha took the loss with 32 saves.
The puck drops again Wednesday, November 4 as the Hawks take on the Vancouver Giants at the Rose Garden at 7 p.m.
