Winterhawks Join Portland Public Schools “Read Together” Initiative
The Winterhawks have joined Portland Public Schools Read Together initiative that promotes literacy in elementary schools, with the goal to have each student read by third grade. In both 2015-16 and 2016-17, the Winterhawks hosted a book drive to benefit Portland Public Schools, PPS Head Start’s Family Literacy Program, and the Children’s Book Bank.
In March 2016, Winterhawks players fanned out to five local elementary schools as part of the national Read Across America Day, in conjunction with Dr. Seuss’ birthday celebration, to read to kids in their classrooms and talk about the importance of reading in everyone’s lives. Floor Hockey & Physical Fitness
We would love to conduct a floor hockey clinic at your school! We can run your PE class, or conduct an afterschool clinic. Hockey is a fun and unique way to be physically active. Kids of all ages will have fun playing floor hockey. We have all the necessary gear — we just need kids and a place to play to bring the fun to you and it’s completely FREE! Fill out our general community request form above for more information.
The Winterhawks love to talk hockey. If your school, class, club, or group is looking for a guest speaker, give us a shot! Hockey is an exciting sport so we don’t have any shortage of enthusiasm when it comes to sharing stories and knowledge. To schedule a speaker, please fill out our general community request form above.
Teddy Bear Toss
The Teddy Bear Toss is one of the most popular Winterhawks games each year. Fans are encouraged to bring teddy bears to the game and when the Hawks score their first goal, fans throw the bears on the ice! All bears are donated to local charities, hospitals, and organizations that benefit the area’s at-risk population. If your organization is interested in receiving bear donations, please fill out our general community request form above for more information.
Each year, Winterhawks players visit Shriner’s, Randall Children’s, and the VA Hospital to hand out teddy bears from the Teddy Bear Toss, along with toys from the Les Schwab Toy Drive, talk with the patients, and spread cheer! Check out photos from previous year’s visits here.
Shop With a Hawk
The Winterhawks have partnered with the Sunshine Division and the team’s Booster Club to provide new toys and clothes for local kids in need. At the annual Shop With a Hawk, each player is matched with an elementary schooler and they shop for items at Fred Meyer using funds generously donated by the Booster Club. Check out photos from the 2015 Shop With a Hawk here!
