Winterhawks Sending Eleven Players to NHL Training Camps

The Portland Winterhawks have eleven players scheduled to attend NHL training camps and rookie tournaments this week.

  • D  Henri Jokiharju – Chicago Blackhawks (2017, 1st Round Pick)
  • G  Cole Kehler – Winnipeg Jets (Invite)
  • F  Skyler McKenzie – Winnipeg Jets (2017, 7th Round Pick)
  • F  Alex Overhardt – Nashville Predators (Invite)
  • D  Keoni Texeira – Vegas Golden Knights (Invite)
  • F  Evan Weinger – Los Angeles Kings (Invite)

“This is a great opportunity for our players to attend their NHL camp,” said Vice President, General Manager and Head Coach Mike Johnston. “We have a strong focus on developing players and to have eleven players attend NHL camps is exciting for the organization.”

Kieffer Bellows, who signed with Portland in May, will be attending the Islanders Rookie Camp in New York from Sept 8th-Sept 13th. Bellows was drafted 19th overall in the 2016 draft by the Islanders.

Both Joachim Blichfeld and Evan Weinger are off to California. Blichfeld will be heading to San Jose’s Rookie Camp for a second straight year. Weinger, whose hometown is Los Angeles, is in Kings Camp as an invite after playing in L.A’s Development Camp in July and earning an Amateur Try-Out Contract.

Cody Glass and Keoni Texeira will be attending the first ever Vegas Golden Knights Rookie Camp in Las Vegas, NV. Glass became the franchise’s first ever NHL Draft pick earlier this June.

The Golden Knights and Kings rookies will face-off in Rookie Games Sept 12th and Sept 13th at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo.

Ryan Hughes and Alex Overhardt earned invites to Nashville Predators Rookie Camp.  On-ice sessions begin on Sept 7th at the Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville. The Predators rookies will compete in a rookie tournament from Sept 9th-12th in Estero, FL against Tampa Bay, Florida, and Washington.

Skyler McKenzie, a seventh round selection by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2017 NHL draft, along with Cole Kehler are headed to the Jets Rookie Camp. Both players will compete in the Young Stars Classic in Penticton, BC from Sept 7th-11th. The tournament is comprised of rookies from Winnipeg, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Calgary.

Brendan De Jong, one of the four Winterhawks selected in the 2017 NHL draft, will be heading to the Carolina Hurricanes Camp. De Jong was picked in the sixth round by the Hurricanes this past draft and participated in Carolina’s Development Camp in the summer.

Henri Jokiharju, drafted 29th overall by Chicago in June, will depart on Sept 13th for Chicago Blackhawks Training Camp. The camp officially begins Sept 15th at the United Center in Chicago.
