Winterhawks rally late to beat Spokane 6-5 in a shootout
Portland (2-2) scored two late goals to tie the game and eventually took down Spokane 6-5 in a shootout in a wild preseason matchup in Kennewick on Thursday.
The Winterhawks came out firing scoring three first period goals. Jake Gricius picked up his third of the preseason just over 7 minutes in to open the scoring. Bronson Sharp and Jaydon Dureau then scored less than 20 seconds apart to give the Hawks a commanding 3-0 lead.
But Spokane would go on a run of their own in the second, scoring 3 unanswered to tie things up. The Chiefs carried their momentum into the 3rd, potting two more to take a 5-3 lead with less than 5 minutes in regulation.
The Hawks pulled goaltender Shane Farkas with just under 4 minutes remaining and the gamble paid off. Ty Kolle buried his 2nd of the preseason on a sweet feed from Jake Gricius to make it a one goal game. Then less than a minute later with the goalie still out, Brad Ginnell tied things at 5 on a shot from the left circle that beat Spokane’s Declan Hobbs.
The game eventually headed to a shootout where Farkas stopped all three Spokane shooters and Ilijah Colina netted the lone goal to give the Hawks the win.
The Winterhawks continue preseason play tomorrow at 11:00am against the Kootenay Ice at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.
