Portland Winterhawks General Manager & Head Coach Mike Johnston has announced that 20-year-old defenseman William Wrenn has been named team captain.

Wrenn joined the Winterhawks in January from the University of Denver and played 29 games with the team over the rest of the 2010-11 season, posting a +25 rating to go along with two goals and 11 assists for 13 points. He added five points in the playoffs. In eight games this season, he has two assists. Wrenn was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the second round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, 43rd overall.

Wrenn becomes the 37th captain in Winterhawks history, joining such players as Braydon Coburn, Adam Deadmarsh, Paul Gaustad, Brenden Morrow and Brent Peterson. Wrenn takes over the role from Brett Ponich, who spent the last two seasons as captain, and this season joined the American Hockey League’s Peoria Rivermen.

“Being named captain is a tremendous honor,” said Wrenn. “Every day I walk into the locker room and see the pictures on the wall of the team’s former captains, and it’s a privilege to be among that group, and a responsibility I embrace.”

With Wrenn the team captain, Sven Bartschi has been named the team’s assistant captain. Joe Morrow, Taylor Peters, Brad Ross and Troy Rutkowski will alternate as the second assistant captain.

“Since joining our team in January, William has been a model of professionalism on and off the ice. He embodies everything we look for in a captain, and is a terrific role model for our younger players,” said Johnston. “Along with our assistant captains we have great veterans in our locker room who comprise our leadership group.”

Five-game ticket plans are now available and start at just $60 per person and include five free gifts. Group rates start at 10 people ($16.50 per person) and every ticket includes a free Winterhawks hat. Call 503-236-HAWK or e-mail today to guarantee the best locations.
