Winterhawks Honor Veterans During Military Salute Night
Veterans Weekend was a special one for the Portland Winterhawks. Starting Saturday night with the annual Boeing Military Salute to honor active and retired members of the armed forces, the Winterhawks were victorious boasting a 3-0 win against the Kelowna Rockets.
Of the over 8,000 fans in attendance, more than 1,000 represented local branches of the military and their families. Among the honors of the night, were Puck Drop participant and Boeing Hometown Hero, Boeing employee, Meleji Meekisho who is serving in the National Guard in the 1186 Military Police Company as the Executive Officer. He received his commission through the University of Oregon’s Reserve Officers’ Training Corps & was activated for Wildland Firefighting Operations.
Our military appreciation continued Sunday as we battled the Rockets for the second straight night, this time in the Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Veterans Day. The Winterhawks honored Franchesca Spann, a scholarship recipient of the Folds of Honor Foundation. She was joined by Miss Oregon Taylor Ballard for on-ice pre-game ceremony. The Winterhawks completed their weekend sweep as they defeated Kelowna 4-2 and improved to a 5-game win-streak.
A special thank you to our Veterans who came out to support the Winterhawks, and our partner sponsors who made their recognition possible. The Winterhawks along with The Boeing Company, Budweiser, Washman, Security Signs, City Center Parking and Penny’s Salsa thank all Veterans for their service.
