Team Morrow Wins The Neely Cup

The annual training camp scrimmage known as the Neely Cup wrapped up Sunday at Winterhawks Skating Center. Each game consisted of two 30-minute halves. Here are today’s results:

First place game: Team Vernon vs. Team Morrow

First place in the 2013 Neely Cup went to Team Morrow, who broke open a close game early in the second period and scored the final four goals of the game to win 7-2.

Morrow opened up a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Brendan Leipsic and Kayden Peck, while defenseman Zach Paterson answered for Vernon, who trailed 2-1 after the first.

Taylor Leier made it 3-1 for Morrow early in the third, but Vernon answered back with a goal from Evan Weinger. But from there it was all Morrow, as Taylor Thompson, Leipsic, Jimmy Lambert and Leier all scored as they ran away with the 7-2 win for the championship.

Third place game: Team Finley vs. Team Playfair

In the morning game for third place, Team Finley jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Tyson Gruninger and Dominic Turgeon.

But Playfair bounced back in the second period, with a pair of goals from Adam de Champlain followed by an Alex Schoenborn marker to take a 3-2 lead. Cameron Obcena then tied for Finley, but Playfair came back with goals from Lukas Walter and Oliver Bjorkstrand to make it 5-3. Finley got a late goal from Ethan Price to come back within one, but that was as close as they got, and Playfair finished with third place and a 5-4 win.
