Neely Cup Day 3 Recap

The Neely Cup continued Saturday afternoon at Winterhawks Skating Center. The eighty players in camp are divided into four teams named after Winterhawks legends: Randy Heath, Dennis Holland, Troy Mick and Ken Yaremchuk.

Two teams square off in separate 30-minute back-to-back games in two sessions each day, meaning each team plays eight games in the tournament. The recaps are below:

Team Holland (2) vs. Team Mick (1), Game 1:
Team Holland took the first game of the day from Team Mick by a score of 2-1. Taylor Peters opened the scoring for Team Mick, but Team Holland came back with goals from Oliver Bjorkstrand and Steven Alldridge for the win.

Team Holland (1) vs. Team Mick (3), Game 2:
Team Mick won the second game 3-1 behind goals from Derrick Reid, Chase De Leo and Taylor Peters. Greg Johnson scored Team Holland’s lone goal in the loss. Team Mick received terrific goaltending late in the game from Troy Martyniuk, who turned away numerous scoring chances after Team Holland pulled their goalie for an extra attacker.

Team Heath (1) vs. Team Yaremchuk (0), Game 1:
Adin Hill posted his second shutout of the tournament as he backstopped Team Heath to 1-0 win over Team Yaremchuk. Hill went the distance for Team Heath while Team Yaremchuk split the netminding duties between Brendan Burke and Luke Stripp, and the goaltending was terrific throughout. The game was scoreless until 1:50 remained when EJ Faust scored the lone goal of the game to give his team the 1-0 victory.

Team Heath (4) vs. Team Yaremchuk (2), Game 2:
Team Heath jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the final game of the day on goals by Cade Gleekel, Ty Rattie and Riley Pettitt. But Team Yaremchuk battled back, getting goals from Derrick Pouliot and Keegan Iverson to cut it to 3-2. But Team Heath sealed the win when Presten Kopeck scored to make it 4-2.

Heath finished the preliminary rounds 5-1, and Heath and Yaremchuk will meet tomorrow for first place. Team Holland and Team Mick will begin the action at 9 a.m. with the third place games.

Team Yaremchuk: 3-3, 17 GF, 16 GA
