Portland Winterhawks Vice President, General Manager & Head Coach Mike Johnston has announced Keoni Texeira has been named the team’s captain.
Texeira, 20, is in his fifth season with the Winterhawks, and his 288 games played are 10th most in franchise history. Texeira has career totals of 34 goals and 81 assists for 115 points. He also set career-highs last season with 12 goals and 33 assists for 45 points.
“I’m extremely honored and blessed to be given the opportunity to be captain,” said Texeira, “I’m looking forward to having a great run with these guys this year.”
In addition to naming Texeira captain, the Winterhawks have named their alternate captains: Alex Overhardt, who is in his fourth season with Portland, Brendan De Jong, a Carolina Hurricanes 2017 sixth-round draft pick in his fourth season with the Winterhawks, and Ryan Hughes, who is in his third season with Portland, will be alternate captains when the Winterhawks wear red. Cody Glass, the Vegas Golden Knights 2017 first round pick in his third full season with Portland, Henri Jokiharju, the Chicago Blackhawks 2017 first round pick in his second season with the Hawks and Skyler McKenzie, the Winnipeg Jets 2017 seventh-round pick in his fourth full season with Portland, will wear the “A” when Portland wears white.
Keoni Texeira becomes the 42nd captain in team history, joining former captains Brent Peterson, Adam Deadmarsh, Brenden Morrow and Paul Gaustad. As well as recent captains Dominic Turgeon, Nic Petan, Taylor Leier and Troy Rutkowski. Texeira takes over the captain’s position from Keegan Iverson who played five seasons in Portland and is now in the LA Kings’ system this season.
