Jones, Leipsic & Petan Win CHL Awards

Portland Winterhawks defenseman Seth Jones was named the Canadian Hockey League’s Top Draft Prospect, while Brendan Leipsic and Nic Petan shared the Leading Scorer Award at the CHL’s annual awards presentation Saturday in Saskatoon.

Jones, NHL Central Scouting’s top-rated North American skater for the 2013 Entry Draft, posted 56 points in 61 games in the regular season, first among the league’s rookie defensemen. He added 15 points in 21 playoff games, and led the team with a +15 rating in the postseason as the Winterhawks won the WHL Championship. Jones was the WHL Rookie of the Year and was named to the Western Conference’s First All-Star Team. He also led the United States to a gold medal at the World Junior Championship.

Leipsic and Petan led all players across the CHL with 120 points apiece to share the Leading Scorer Award. They previously won the Bob Clarke Trophy as the WHL’s leading scorers. It was the third time two players had shared the league lead in points, and the first time a pair of teammates had accomplished the feat.

Leipsic’s 49 goals led the league, and he went on to add 24 points in 21 playoff games. He was named to the Western Conference’s Second All-Star Team. Leipsic was a third round pick of the Nashville Predators in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, and earlier this week signed a three-year entry level contract.

Petan’s 120 points more than tripled the 35 he posted as a rookie last season, and he led the WHL in assists with 74. He went on to add 28 points in 21 playoff games and was named to the Western Conference’s First All-Star Team. He is ranked 33rd among North American skaters for the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.
