Portland Winterhawks (5) vs Everett Silvertips (2)
Angels of the Winds Arena – Everett, WA– Friday, April 6th
Portland got off to a quick start in Everett with two goals in the first 10 minutes and never looked back, taking down the Silvertips 5-2 in Game 1 of their second round matchup.
Jake Gricius got the Winterhawks on the board just 2:13 into the opening frame off a rebound from a shot from John Ludvig. Then, just over seven minutes later, Conor MacEachern banged in another rebound, this time off of a Reece Newkirk shot, to make it 2-0 Portland.
The Hawks would extend their lead to three early in the second, when John Ludvig wired home a slapshot from the top of the left circle to make it 3-0. But the Silvertips responded, scoring twice in just over six minutes to make it a 3-2 game with 1:03 remaining in the second period. But with just 1.1 seconds left in the frame, Kieffer Bellows found Skyler McKenzie on a 2-on-1, who then beat Hart to give Portland a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes.
In the third, the Cole Kehler made 11 saves for Portland, including a massive stop on a Patrick Bajkov breakaway. Cody Glass would then net his fourth of the postseason just before the midway point to give Portland a 5-2 lead. The Hawks would play shutdown defense the rest of the way and hold on for the 5-2 victory. Cole Kehler made 32 saves on the night.
With the win, the Winterhawks take a 1-0 series advantage.
