Hawks Fall 7-2 in Game 5

The Portland Winterhawks fell 7-2 to the Kamloops Blazers Saturday in Game 5 of their second round playoff series in front of 10,135 fans at the Rose Garden.

The Hawks lead the series 3-2, with Game 6 set for Monday night at 7 p.m. in Kamloops.

Kamloops struck first 8:53 into the first when defenseman Marek Hrbas scored to make it 1-0, followed by a goal from Jordan DePape at the 16:46 mark to take a 2-0 lead into the second period.

The Blazers made it 3-0 at the 5:30 mark of the second when Ryan Hanes scored his first of the playoffs. Portland got on the board at the 8:32 mark when Brendan Leipsic scored to cut the Blazers’ lead to 3-1. With under a minute to go in the period, Kamloops got a power play goal from Brendan Ranford to take a 4-1 lead going into the third.

Kamloops extended the lead to 5-1 at the 6:30 mark of the third when Tim Bozon scored on a penalty shot, then made it 6-1 on a goal by Chase Souto. After Souto’s goal, Brendan Burke replaced Mac Carruth in net for Portland. Midway through the period the Winterhawks killed a two-minute five-on-three penalty, but just as the Hawks finished killing the penalty DePape scored to make it 7-1.

Portland got one back at the 11:23 mark when Marcel Noebels scored to make it 7-2, which would stand as the final.

You can't focus on the last couple of games. You took three straight from the Blazers. You're just sixty minutes away from putting them away and moving on in the playoffs. You have all the talent in the world, literally. Just concentrate on putting the plays together, clean passes, and have fun as you put them away at home. Go Hawks!!

Hoo-yah! Things are looking pretty darn good this pre-season... can't wait to see how it works out for real.
