Four Winterhawks Selected in 2017 NHL Draft
The Portland Winterhawks saw four players selected in the 2017 NHL Draft. In the first round, center Cody Glass was selected sixth overall by the Vegas Golden Knights, while defenseman Henri Jokiharju went 29th overall to the Chicago Blackhawks. On day two Saturday, defenseman Brendan De Jong was selected in the sixth round, 166th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes, and Skyler McKenzie was selected 198th overall in round seven by the Winnipeg Jets.
Glass is coming off a career year in 2016-17 with the Winterhawks, in which he recorded 94 points in 69 games played. He was selected a first-team all-star in the WHL’s Western Conference, and far surpassed the 27 points he picked up in his rookie season.
Jokiharju, meanwhile, was the WHL’s leading scorer among rookie defensemen this season with his 48 points, and was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks at 29th overall. Jokiharju becomes the 12th Winterhawks player selected by the Blackhawks in Winterhawks history, the most of any NHL franchise.
Brendan De Jong was selected in the sixth round, 166th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in his second season of eligibility for the NHL Draft. Last season De Jong notched career highs in goals, assists, and points, notching 8 goals and 23 points while playing all 72 games this season.
Skyler McKenzie was also in his second season of draft eligibility, and was snapped up by the Winnipeg Jets at 198th overall in the seventh round. McKenzie was the Winterhawks’ leading goal-scorer this season, combining with first-rounder Cody Glass to rifle home 42 goals this season. McKenzie’s 42 goals and 84 points in the 2016-17 season both more than tripled his previous career highs.
Glass and Jokiharju are the 28th and 29th Winterhawks players to be selected in the first round of the NHL Draft in franchise history. By being selected sixth overall, Glass is the highest selected Winterhawk since Seth Jones went fourth overall to the Nashville Predators in 2013. The Winterhawks’ have a rich tradition of producing talent for the NHL Draft, with 137 players now having been selected in the NHL Draft in franchise history. This marks the first year the Winterhawks have had multiple first-round NHL picks since Sven Baertschi and Joe Morrow were selected in the first round of the 2011 NHL Draft.
