Portland Winterhawks Vice President, General Manager & Head Coach Mike Johnston announced that Cody Glass will be the 2018-19 team captain.
Glass, in his fourth season with the Winterhawks, has played 206 games so far. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native has career totals of 83 goals and 153 assists for 236 points. He also set career-highs last season with 37 goals and 65 assists for 102 points.
“We have a young team and I want to lead by example. I want to make everyone improve everyday so we can become a better hockey team,” said Glass.
In addition to naming Glass captain, the Winterhawks have named their alternate captains: Brendan De Jong, a Carolina Hurricanes 2017 sixth-round draft pick in his fifth season with the Winterhawks, will have a permanent “A” for both home and road Winterhawks games.
Forwards Ryan Hughes, who is in his fourth season with Portland, and Jake Gricius, in his third season, will be alternate captains when the Winterhawks wear white. Joachim Blichfeld, a San Jose Sharks 2016 seventh-round draft pick is in this third season with the Hawks and Jared Freadrich, a 20 year old in his first season with the Winterhawks will wear the “A” when Portland wears red.
Cody Glass becomes the 43rd captain in team history, joining former captains Brent Peterson, Adam Deadmarsh, Brenden Morrow and Paul Gaustad. As well as recent captains Keegan Iverson, Dominic Turgeon, Nic Petan and Taylor Leier. Glass takes over the captain’s position from Keoni Texiera who played five seasons in Portland and is now in the ECHL with the Wichita Thunder this season.
