Bantam Draft Results

The Portland Winterhawks selected 13 players yesterday in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft.

The team’s first draft choice was defenseman Keoni Texeira, selected in the second round, 26th overall with a pick obtained from the Everett Silvertips. Texeira, a native of Fontana, California, played this season with the L.A. Selects of the Tier 1 Elite Major Bantam AAA league, registering 35 goals and 47 assists for 82 points in 67 games.

The Winterhawks then took defenseman Caleb Jones in the third round, 64th overall. Jones is the brother of top prospect Seth Jones, a player who the Winterhawks acquired the right to talk to from Everett. The younger Jones played for the Dallas Stars of the Tier 1 Elite Major Bantam AAA league this season.

With their fourth round pick, 86th overall, the Hawks selected defenseman Justin Greer. The Edmonton native had 34 points in 28 games for Edmonton CAC of the AMBHL AAA bantam league. Portland’s fifth round pick, 108th overall, was left wing Travis Kilbrea from Arborg, Manitoba. Kilbrea posted 31 points in 29 games for the Interlake Lightning of the WMHA AAA Bantam Major league.

The team’s sixth round pick, 130th overall, was forward Ethan Price from Lincoln, Nebraska. Price had 14 points in 18 games this season with the Omaha AAA Lancers of the NAPHL 16U league. In the seventh round, Portland selected forward Owen Stout from West Vancouver, British Columbia, 152nd overall, then took forward Ryan Wilkinson from Seafair, British Columbia in the eighth round with the 174th overall selection.

Portland’s ninth round selection, 196th overall, was goaltender Mitchell Bullion from Anchorage, Alaska, and in the 10th round, 218th overall, the Hawks selected center Evan Tschumi from Calgary.

The Hawks selected center Alex Overhardt from Denver in the 11th round, 240th overall and defenseman Blake Heinrich from Minnesota in the 12th round, 262nd overall. They took right wing Evan Weinger from California in the 14th round, 306th overall, and then selected defenseman Troy Ring from Vancouver in the 15th round, 328th overall.

The Winterhawks are currently taking on the Edmonton Oil Kings in the WHL Final. The series returns to Portland with Game 3 Sunday and Game 4 next Tuesday, both at the Rose Garden.
