Bjorkstrand Makes History In Win

Oliver Bjorkstrand made history as the Portland Winterhawks (37-20-2-3) earned a 5-2 win in Seattle Saturday over the Thunderbirds (31-23-4-4).

Bjorkstrand scored in the first period, his 11th straight game with a goal. That 11-game streak ties the franchise record for consecutive games with a goal, which was set by Tony Currie all the way back in the franchise’s inaugural season in 1976-77.

It was teammate Chase De Leo who opened the scoring early in the first, as just 2:46 into the game he converted on the Hawks’ first shot of the game for a 1-0 lead. Seattle’s Roberts Lipsbergs tied it at 8:29, but a few minutes later Oliver Bjorkstrand scored his record-tying goal to give Portland a 2-1 lead going into the second.

It remained a 2-1 lead until the 2:29 mark of the second, when Paul Bittner tipped in a Bjorkstrand point shot for a 3-1 advantage, which remained the score going into the third.

The Thunderbirds got back within one when Mathew Barzal scored 5:22 into the third to cut Portland’s lead to 3-2. But midway through the frame, Bittner scored his second of the game to once again make it a two-goal game at 4-2. Late in the period with Kozun on the bench for an extra attacker, Bjorkstrand scored into the empty net to finish with the 5-2 win.

While Bjorkstrand made history, Adin Hill was terrific in net for the Hawks, making 49 saves on 51 shots to earn the win. Kozun allowed four goals on 27 shots, while Portland added an empty net marker.

The Hawks’ next game will be against these same Thunderbirds, as the two teams will meet Friday at the Moda Center.
